Wellington Phoenix bring A-Leagues back to Wollongong

The Wellington Phoenix will call WIN Stadium their A-Leagues home away from home in Australia for season 2021-22 and beyond.

The Illawarra stadium was today confirmed as a home venue for the men’s and women’s teams for the upcoming season.

Under a three-year agreement, the Phoenix will play up to 11 home matches – spread across the Club’s men’s and women’s teams – at the Illawarra venue for season 2021-22, with at least a further three games across the following two seasons.

Following the release of the full A-League draw today, the Phoenix men’s team will kick off their A-League season away against Macarthur FC, before playing their first home match at WIN Stadium in Round 2 against the Central Coast Mariners.

Three more home games will follow in Round 3 against Western Sydney Wanderers FC, Round 8 against Brisbane Roar and Round 9 against Newcastle Jets, while the women’s draw will be announced in due course.  

Wellington Phoenix General Manager, David Dome, said that the Club is delighted to be returning to Wollongong during its stay in Australia.

“The prospect of returning to Wollongong for a period of time is made easier for us thanks to the support we continue to receive from WIN Stadium and other local partners,” says Dome.

“The relationship we’ve built with WIN Stadium and the wider Wollongong area is important to our Club, and we hope the fans are excited to see us return to this fantastic region – this time with a brand new women’s team in addition to its men’s side.”

Venues NSW CEO Kerrie Mather said WIN Stadium is looking forward to welcoming the Phoenix back to the Illawarra.  

“Last season, WIN Stadium and the city of Wollongong became a home away from home for the Wellington Phoenix while navigating the challenging Covid-19 landscape,” Mather said.

“It’s exciting to secure a three-year partnership with the Phoenix to play all women’s home games at WIN Stadium and a further four men’s matches for the upcoming season.

“This is a significant result for the Illawarra community to secure even more live sport and elite football for the region.” 


Venues NSW board member and former Matilda, Amy Duggan, added: “It’s exciting to secure elite football matches in the Illawarra region for the upcoming A-Leagues season. 

“Seeing the best female and male footballers in the country at WIN Stadium will help to inspire the next generation of local footballers.”

The Wellington Phoenix home matches at WIN STadium over the next three seasond continues Venues NSW commitment to bringing the best live sport and events to its venues. This announcement follows the Illawarra Hawks' commitment to play home games at WIN Entertainment Centre for the next three seasons, eith even more new and exciting live sports and events to be confirmed for the region's premier venues shortly.
