Knights Centre of Excellence to start construction in early 2020

Wednesday 11 December 2019 3:54pm

The Newcastle Knights Centre of Excellence is one step closer to reality with the City of Newcastle unanimously approving a development application for the Broadmeadow-based facility.

The Centre of Excellence at District Park is on land owned by Venues NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.

It will deliver a world-class rugby league training facility, three full sized training fields, a 40-metre running track, and outdoor gym facilities for recreational use. The site will also be accessible for community use.

Venues NSW Chief Executive Officer Paul Doorn said Council’s decision is a win for not only the Knights but for the wider Hunter region.

“The Knights Centre of Excellence will be an important asset for the community and the Newcastle Knights.

“We look forward to working closely with the community and our key stakeholders within the precinct throughout the completion of this facility,” Mr Doorn said.

CEO of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Richard Jones said he was pleased with the outcome.

“We are grateful that the approved design considers the needs of our Service so that we can safely co-exist on the site and have no doubt the Centre will be a very positive asset for the region,” Mr Jones said.

The Knights Chief Executive Officer Philip Gardner is looking forward to the Club moving into the facility in time for the 2021 pre-season.

“We anticipate the tender going out this side of Christmas with the intention that the build can start in early 2020.

“Not only will our Club have a first-class facility to rival any in the game, but the Centre of Excellence will provide an incredible venue for local and regional community needs and ensure we have the best tools for future generations of players,” Mr Gardner said.
