City of Newcastle and Venues NSW secures Elton John
Elton John is coming to Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium.
In a major boost for the Hunter, the internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and composer has been secured to perform live at the 30,000-capacity venue on January 10, 2023, as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour in Australia.
The English-born singer, whose hits include Rocket Man, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Tiny Dancer and Your Song, among many others, will rock McDonald Jones Stadium for one night only.
McDonald Jones Stadium’s first and only major concert in 32 years has been made possible by a partnership between the City of Newcastle and Venues NSW, which manages McDonald Jones Stadium, to secure major events for the region.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes welcomed the sponsorship agreement with Venues NSW and said the partnership will continue to enhance Newcastle's status as a world-class destination with a burgeoning events and tourism economy.
"City of Newcastle (CN), in partnership with Venues NSW, is proud to work with Frontier Touring to secure Elton John for Newcastle in January 2023," Cr Nelmes said.
"Newcastle is a premier events destination and CN is investing significantly in the sector, in line with Newcastle's Destination Management Plan, through proactive event acquisition and sponsorship programs, as well as partnering with Venues NSW to secure major events to McDonald Jones Stadium.
"Attracting headline acts of this calibre are a testament to our city’s world-class facilities and amenity and is indicative of a maturing, sophisticated economy.
"Major events create an invaluable opportunity to showcase our city’s broader attractions and generate a much-needed economic boost for the city's tourism and hospitality sectors still feeling the impacts of COVID-19.
"Thanks to this strategic partnership, our city's vibrant major events calendar for 2023 is already shaping up to be impressive, and we look forward to welcoming Elton John and his loyal fan base to Newcastle."
Venues NSW & McDonald Jones Stadium CEO Kerrie Mather added: “We can’t wait to welcome Elton John to Newcastle as part of his Australian tour in what will be an unforgettable night for the region.
“We’re about to embark on the busiest concert season in New South Wales arguably ever, with Elton John to perform live in Newcastle and Sydney, while Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Guns N’ Roses, Harry Styles and Red Hot Chili Peppers are just some of the global superstars announced so far.
“This is an incredibly exciting result for Newcastle, and just a taste of the major events to come for the region.”
