More than 4,700 beanies were sold at McDonald Jones Stadium during the NRL's Round 19 Beanie for Brain Cancer Round between 25-28 July 2019, in support of the good work of the Mark Hughes Foundation. Rugby league fans from across NSW were being encouraged to ‘get their beanies on’ to support the former Newcastle Knight Mark Hughes’ annual fundraiser.
Other venues, including ANZ and Bankwest stadiums, also stood behind the cause and sold beanies at all games and promoted the cause on their big screens.
McDonald Jones Stadium donned its own three-metre high beanie and was renamed Beanie for Brain Cancer Stadium. Beanies sold at the venues were so popular that they were sold out prior to kick-off.
Overall, the Mark Hughes Foundation sold 170,000 beanies and raised $3.1 million across Round 19.
