Statement on the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
Saturday 10 April 2021 10:24am
We wish to extend our sincere condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family following the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed watching sport and were regular guests of the Sydney Cricket Ground during their visits to Australia.
In 1954, His Royal Highness made a peak hour dash from Central Station to the SCG to watch John Landy’s attempt to break the four-minute mile, and in 1973 Prince Philip was joined by Her Majesty and The Princess Royal at a rugby league game.
Prince Philip founded the Duke of Edinburgh International Award for young people in over 130 countries, and we are proud to be a #Duke4Sport partner.
Also in 1954, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness visited Wollongong Showground (what is WIN Stadium today) and in 1970 the International Sports Centre in Newcastle (now known as McDonald Jones Stadium) was officially opened by Her Majesty and Prince Philip.
Our thoughts are also with our friends in the United Kingdom at this profoundly sad time.
Flags will be lowered at the Sydney Cricket Ground and McDonald Jones Stadium in honour of his extraordinary life of dedicated service.
