Illawarra Hawks Star Oscar Forman - Wolves A-League Ambassador

Thursday 27 July 2017 9:00am

Illawarra Hawks Basketball stalwart, Oscar Forman, is the latest Illawarra and South Coast identity and sporting star to throw his support behind the Wollongong Wolves expansion plans, signing on as a Wolves A League Ambassador.

Oscar first represented the Hawks in 2010 and in the ensuing seasons has notched up over 200 games for the club and has proven to be one of the most popular players in Hawks history.

“I absolutely love the Illawarra and South Coast. The lifestyle and strong sense of community make the region such a great place to live. Wollongong is home for me now and with Gaia and our beautiful new baby daughter, Olivia, I couldn’t think of a better place to bring up our family.”

Oscar has been at the forefront of growing basketball in the Illawarra and South Coast and knows first hand how important national sporting representation is, particularly for the juniors and next generation of sporting heroes of our region.

“It’s crucial to have complete pathways in place so kids can progress and play at the highest possible level, right here in their own backyard. The Hawks have proven our region can more than compete on a national level, and in football the Wolves can do exactly the same. We’ve got a huge sporting nursery here, up and down the coast, and a football team, representing our region in the A League, to me, makes complete sense.”

Forman will be involved in the promotion and presentation of the Wolves A League submission and play a role in many of the Community Engagement Programs being developed and rolled out under the Wolves umbrella. He will be a regular face in the crowd at home matches and provide his support to leadership, education and healthy living initiatives developed by the Wolves and the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council.

“Through sport you can make great changes in people’s lives. Whether it’s basketball, football, league or cricket, we can use sport to really engage our communities, develop a strong level of pride and deliver pathways and opportunities that make significant changes for the future. From sport, life lessons are learned and friendships are forged that last a lifetime.”

A stand alone team representing the Illawarra and South Coast has been the Wolves focus and they are putting together a complete, holistic and very impressive submission for inclusion in the expanded national A League competition. When FFA announces the criteria, the Wolves are well advanced in preparation and implementation of A League and W League teams and a level of Community Partnerships and Engagement, in association with the Illawarra Stingrays, the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council and UOW College, and a variety of other sporting and community organisations , that will see sport, community and education combined like never before in Australia.

Forman concluded by commenting “Our region needs and deserves our very own team in the A League. The Hawks have proven how successful we can be and the Wolves will do exactly the same. Along with the Stingrays, we are 3 truly representative sporting sides for our area, and we can definitely assist each other in growing our sports and participation numbers and showing the rest of the country what a sporting powerhouse we are. I am very pleased to be an A League Ambassador for the Wolves and will do whatever I can to make it happen.”.

Oscar Forman joins Socceroos and AFC Bournemouth FC, goalkeeper, Adam Federici as official Wollongong Wolves Ambassadors with more announcements to be made imminently.
